Baby Jordan's heartbeat is strong! Priase God. Its heart is beating 140 times a minute, which is right in the healthy range of 120-180 of where it should be. Baby Jordan has grown from 1/4 a centimeter in our doctor's visit a week and two days ago to a full centimeter today. We are very excited!
Our next visit will be on January 20th - three weeks from today. In that appointment, we'll get to hear the baby's heartbeat! I can't even imagine how cool that is.

Waterworks
It seems I'm at that stage of pregnancy where I get very emotional. Jason and I watched Up (the animated movie about an old man who wants to take an adventure after his wife dies) this morning, and I bawled through almost the entire movie. A few tears are warranted at a couple parts of the movie, but bawling should not be necessary. I was so red and puffy by the end of the movie that I didn't even recognize myself in the mirror afterwards. Jason had a great time with it. I was laughing and crying at the same time as I made fun of myself for being so emotional, so he decided to spur it on by having me remember special moments of our wedding, and asking me to picture our child's wedding. He's devious, but I love him.
That's all for today. More to come on Wednesday after we have our second sonogram.

First doctor's visit
We went to the doctor yesterday and got our first sonogram. Here's what we learned:
1. We're actually only 6 weeks pregnant. The due date is set for 8/10/2010.
2. No, we're not having twins. They only see one baby. So stop tourmenting me with the thought of having to pay for two kids at once!
3. Baby Jordan is approximately 1/4 a centimeter in length
4. On the sonogram, the baby in its yolk sac looks like a diamond ring - the lining of the yolk sac being the band of the ring, and the baby sitting on top being the diamond. We were able to see the heart beat, which was really cool! They didn't let us listen to it though - they said they typically don't listen to it this early since the heart is still forming. They do take the heart rate though. More on that below.
5. The egg came out of the right ovary. They said that's how we got pregnant. Jason responded that he thought he had something to do with the pregnancy (he said that later - not in front of the doctor). They were able to tell that because the egg coming out of the ovary caused a small cyst on my right ovary. They said that is VERY common, and that they'll just keep an eye on its size to make sure it's regular.
6. Baby Jordan's heart beat is 100 beats per minute. That's actually low - it should be 120 at the lowest. HOWEVER, don't worry- they said 6 weeks pregant is the absolute soonest they could even pick up the heart beat with the sonogram, and they've found many times before that the reading is not accurate due to taking this measurement too early. We're going back next Wednesday (12/30) so that we can get a better reading. Please pray that our baby is healthy and has a strong heart! Jason and I really feel like this is going to be okay, and the doctor sounded optimistic as well. She said everything else looks perfect for being at 6 weeks.
7. Last thing we learned - that I'm an idiot. We thought the appointment was over when our doctor left the room. But apparently we were suppose to stay and have a nurse do blood work on me! I should have known better - I knew they had to do bloodwork in the first visit, but when she left and said goodbye, and reminded us to book the next ultrasound before leaving, we thought we were done! Oh well. I go back in first thing tomorrow morning to do the blood work.
We get to tell Jason's parents the good news on Thursday night, and then will tell the rest of the extended family on Christmas day. We're very excited about that!!!

A couple weeks ago I peed on a stick
Actually, make that 4 sticks - all of which confirmed that we are expecting a baby! Jason was not home when I took the first test. He did not get home until a few hours later. As soon as he walked in the door, I took his hand without a word, and led him to the bathroom. Along the way he asked if he had left a mess in there. I was a little too nervous/excited to laugh. I pointed to the test, and told him, "I think we're pregnant!"
His first reaction was something like, "Whoa, really???" I had caught him so off guard, since neither of us had expected this, that it took it a while to really settle in. After a few hours - and especially after a few days - he grew more and more excited as the shock wore off.
At this point, we've only told my parents and my closest girlfriends. We're very excited to tell Jason's parents and the rest of my family, but thought it would be special to wait until Christmas. Plus, Jason's parents are coming to us for Christmas this year, and we agreed we'd really like to tell them in person.
We have our first doctor's appointment on Monday, where we should get a picture of the sonogram. Our plan is to put copies of the sonogram in various frames - one for Jason's parents, one for our family's white elephant game on Christmas day (our way of telling the extended family), and one for each great-grandmother to be. I can't wait to see everyone's reaction; especially my grandma's!
According to pregnancy due date calculators online, I'm about 6 or 7 weeks pregnant, and due around August 12th, 2010. We will know more after our doctor's appointment on Monday. Here's a bit of trivia for you though. When a doctor says a woman is 6 weeks pregnant, it doesn't mean conception happened 6 weeks ago. Week one of pregnancy is a woman's last period, where her cycle starts over again. Week 2 or 3 is when conception happens. I never knew that until I started doing more research!
Most of my blog posts beyond tonight will not be this lengthly. Although I did set up this blog to share my journey as a mother to be, I also liked the idea of sharing our progress with family and friends. I signed up for weekly emails from BabyCenter.com, which gives a paragraph or two describing what's happening with the baby that week, and two pictures to give an idea of shape and size. The first picture shows the approximate size, using a seed or piece of fruit as an example and comparing it to a quarter to give scale. The second is an image of what my baby might look like this week. So below are this week's pictures and paragraphs, assuming I'm 7 weeks pregnant. Enjoy!
Week 7
The big news this week: Hands and feet are emerging from developing arms and legs — although they look more like paddles at this point than the tiny, pudgy extremities you're daydreaming about holding and tickling. Technically, your baby is still considered an embryo and has something of a small tail, which is an extension of her tailbone. The tail will disappear within a few weeks, but that's the only thing getting smaller. Your baby has doubled in size since last week and now measures half an inch long, about the size of a blueberry.
If you could see inside your womb, you'd spot eyelid folds partially covering her peepers, which already have some color, as well as the tip of her nose and tiny veins beneath parchment-thin skin. Both hemispheres of your baby's brain are growing, and her liver is churning out red blood cells until her bone marrow forms and takes over this role. She also has an appendix and a pancreas, which will eventually produce the hormone insulin to aid in digestion. A loop in your baby's growing intestines is bulging into her umbilical cord, which now has distinct blood vessels to carry oxygen and nutrients to and from her tiny body.
